Shareholders to be involved in governance of major institutions

A stewardship code has been launched by the Financial Reporting Council, designed to increase the involvement of large-scale investors in the running of major companies.

The code is intended to improve the quality of engagement, with shareholders monitoring the companies they invest in and alerting them to any concerns. It will also be mandatory for shareholders for take part in shareholder votes, and make known the way they voted.

Critics have, however, claimed that the voluntary code does not go far enough, and is the same as the Institutional Shareholders Committee (ISC) code.
