Equal opportunities policies

Anti-discrimination law affects all aspects of employment, from recruitment to retirement or dismissal.

As an employer, you will be held liable for the discriminatory behaviour of your employees in the course of their employment, even if you were not aware that discrimination was taking place, unless you can demonstrate you took all reasonably practicable steps to prevent the discrimination, harassment or victimisation from occurring.

Failure to take all reasonable steps can be extremely costly as awards for employees in discrimination claims are currently unlimited and for this reason, we advise all employers to have in place up to date equal opportunities policy.
All your employees should also be made aware of their responsibilities under your in-house policy, with a copy readily available to them.

We can assist in drafting your policy statement and in training you and your staff regarding their obligations. We can also provide immediate legal advice if you become concerned that discrimination has taken place.
