Absence

The cost of absence takes a huge toll on the UK economy. According to a report by the Confederation of British Industry and AXA, absence from work cost the economy £13.2 billion in 2008.

Whatever the overall cost may be, every employer understands that absence disrupts their business and has a negative effect on productivity and profitability.
There may be many different reasons for absence from work, so you need to have in place appropriate policies to deal with absence and apply them consistently.

We can advise you in relation to both short and long-term absence, capability procedures and employee management. For example, an employee’s absence could be due to a condition which amounts to a disability for the purposes of the Disability Discrimination Act 1995.

Where an employee has been absent for extended periods, options to consider include consulting with the employee, considering alternative employment and obtaining medical evidence before taking any action against them.

As well as advising on specific absence issues, we can review your existing absence policies and procedures, to ensure they are up to date and legally compliant, or draft new documentation.
