Family rights encompass a number of rights that family members are able to exercise by virtue of them being a parent or main carer for a child.
The obvious examples are maternity and paternity leave, however further provision is made for those who require time off due to an unforeseen changes in childcare arrangements, or if a child is taken ill.
Eligible employees also have the right to make an application for flexible working. The entitlements of parents and others in respect of family rights increased in 2007, and now extend to rights for carers who are providing care for a disabled minor.
