Compromise agreements
Working relationships can sometimes turn sour and break down irretrievably. As protection against tribunal claims in such situations, your employer may ask you to enter into a legally binding contract, often referred to as a compromise or severance agreement.
The agreement is designed to set out the terms on which you and your employer part company and can offer benefits to both sides. Normally, a compromise agreement offers the employee a sum of money in return for their agreement not to pursue certain legal claims against their employer.
Before a compromise agreement can be legally binding, you must receive independent legal advice and it is normal for your employer to make a contribution towards the legal fees.
We can explain compromise agreement terms, advise on their implications for you and, if necessary, negotiate with your employer on your behalf in order to protect your interests and achieve an agreement that you are comfortable in signing and accepting as legally binding.
