Police station

“I have done nothing wrong, so I don’t need a solicitor” is a common misconception. In fact, legal advice during the earliest stages of any criminal investigation is essential.

The police have far-reaching powers to stop, search or arrest a person suspected of a criminal offence, which we understand can be a worrying and stressful experience.

We also know that the progress of a criminal investigation often depends on things said or done while someone is in police custody, so legal advice during detention at the police station can be critical. We provide advice on a daily basis on:

  • advice on police powers of stop and search, seizure and detention
  • advice and representation when in custody and in interview
  • advice to third parties when a relative or friend is in custody
  • non-police powers where an individual is wanted for questioning by HM Revenue & Customs, the Serious Fraud Office, the Department for Work and Pensions, Department of Trade and Industry or any other investigative agency
  • police powers of arrest.

We have an out-of-hours emergency telephone service number and are able to attend at the police station at any time, 365 days a year.

In both Chelmsford and Southend-on-Sea, our offices are close to the main police station, meaning we are ideally placed to provide fast, efficient assistance when you need it most. We also welcome agency instructions from other solicitors.

Almost every person arrested in the police station is eligible for Legal Aid funding. For more information, please click here.
