Money laundering
Money laundering is the way criminals and terrorists introduce “dirty” money generated through crime, or intended for illegal activities, into banking and financial services systems, making it more difficult to detect and confiscate.
The Proceeds of Crime Act 2002 introduced a range of offences, criminalising apparently innocent transactions where suspected criminal property is involved.
Banks, building societies, other businesses providing financial services and regulated professions – including solicitors, licensed conveyancers and estate agents – must have in place “know your client” procedures to prevent their services being used to launder money. Knowing, suspecting or having reasonable grounds for suspecting that someone is involved in money laundering, must, by law, be reported.
Our team includes our own money laundering reporting officer, with in-house responsibility for detection, reporting and preventing money laundering and we are registered by the Law Society to provide training in anti-money laundering procedures. Other services include:
- advice on compliance and the implementation of preventative measures
- experience in representing defendants in criminal investigations and proceedings.
