Magistrates' Court

All criminal cases for adults begin in the Magistrates' Court and the majority – ranging from road traffic offences to violence and dishonesty – are dealt with there.

The philosophy of our specialist Magistrates' Court team is that everyone accused of an offence, of whatever nature, is entitled to a strong and committed representation and we provide assistance on a daily basis with:

  • representation at all stages of proceedings in the Magistrates’ Court including pleas, bail applications, trials and sentencing
  • advice on appeals to the Crown Court against the Magistrates’ Court decision
  • road traffic matters
  • prosecutions brought by the Health and Safety Executive, the Environment  Agency, local authority trading standards departments and the Department for Work and Pensions.

Our offices in Chelmsford and Southend-on-Sea are close to the courts, which means that we are ideally placed to provide speedy assistance in Magistrates’ Court proceedings.

Funding for Magistrates’ Court work is often available through the criminal Legal Aid system. For more information, please click here.
